Charcoal Ice Cream by Bohol Bee Farm

Black Ice Cream

Black-Colored Ice Cream

Ice cream comes in different flavors. I often just see them as different colors. I would often look at the color first and decide before actually asking about the flavor. Have you ever seen a black-colored ice cream? Well, I just did. Introducing the Charcoal Ice Cream by Bohol Bee Farm.

Bohol Bee Farm

I was strolling around SM Cebu for no particular reason. I felt like going out that day. I saw a couple walking towards me. The usual show-off couple who can’t seem to let go of each other but what caught my attention was the ice cream they were eating. At first, I thought it was just blueberries but something doesn’t seem right.

The color ain’t the same as usual. It was not that dark but I was pretty much sure the color belong to the family of black. It looked as though the color black and silver was mixed. It piqued my interest but it was rude to keep staring at the couple eating it. So I decided to visit the stall where I saw them buying it.

Charcoal Ice Cream

As I approached the stall, I saw the label right away. It was Charcoal Ice Cream. Yes, you read it right! Ice cream with charcoal as its primary ingredient. It’s not just some black food coloring deliberately used to produce a black-colored ice cream. Those that can be a great dessert decoration during Halloween events. It was the real deal. It was a product from Bohol Bee Farm.

I was able to visit Bohol before the pandemic and I even remember that Bohol Bee Farm was part of the tour itinerary. I was able to see the cultured bee colony they have. Enjoy fine dining in their ocean-view restaurant. However this is the first time I ever heard of them having this type of product. My curiosity level just keeps rising.

As all of you might have noticed, I’m the type of eater that would buy anything new. I know some would say food is food and ice cream is ice cream but what I’m trying to say is I got the flare for food innovation. I get mesmerized by how a simple change in flavor or food presentation could not just satisfy my belly but also my eyes. Food is also art.

So going back, it might be a small stall but it has a lot of proudly Pinoy flavored ice cream. I also saw a dragon fruit-flavored ice cream. The color blend is also appealing but I already covered dragon fruit popsicles on my previous blogs. It did not make as much impact as the Charcoal Ice cream. I immediately order one scope.

Is charcoal safe to eat?

While waiting for my turn, a question suddenly popped into my mind. Is charcoal safe to eat? If charcoal is the primary ingredient of this ice cream, does that mean I’ll be eating burnt wood?

charcoal

When I was young, I only knew charcoal was used as a fuel to cook. I often get my hands and face dirty while cooking because of it. As I grow up, I’ve been hearing a lot of beauty products made from charcoal.

There was this active charcoal teeth whitening powder and I was like — yeah that seems plausible. A charcoal face mask which I would admit using several times. And many other beauty products which I did buy once or twice that contain active charcoal ingredients but that’s just it. Never did I imagine eating charcoal. But here I am, waiting eagerly to get my hands on that charcoal ice cream.

Charcoal Ice Cream made from “Bagul”

I was really curious as to how the ice cream was made. I initially thought it was someone playing with food coloring just like how Professor Utonium accidentally created the Powerpuff Girls. That it was just simply named “charcoal ice cream” since the color turned out that way. Out of curiosity, I asked the sales lady about it. It was initially made from the pyrolysis of “bagul” or coconut shell. Apart from her guaranteeing the cleanliness of the process, there were also health benefits derived from it

Benefits of Eating Charcoal

For beauty products, all I know is that charcoal can help in getting rid of excess oil, banishing blackheads, minimizing the appearance of pores, etc. I deep dive all those items but if you’re interested please visit beautyhub.ph for more details.

I did a quick Mr. Google search while waiting for my order. According to eater.com “when a person consumes activated charcoal in ice cream, the charcoal sucks up the calcium, potassium, and other vitamins that would be found in the milk. This prevents the stomach lining from absorbing those nutrients, which means that the body eliminates them as waste alongside the charcoal.”

That and along with other contents cleared some of my doubts. My curiosity just reached the maximum level. I am so ready to eat this.

How does Charcoal Ice Cream Taste

Since it was just a stall with no dine-in area, I had to go down the food court to savor it. There was no particular smell coming out from it. There was also nothing unusual with the texture.

Now time to check out the taste. I can’t tell if it tasted exactly like charcoal since I had never eaten raw charcoal before. I can taste a hint of coconut but the creamy taste is more dominant. If any of you is a fan of munchkins, then the taste might be familiar. It actually tasted like desiccated coconut mixed with a whole lot of cream and honey.

Charcoal Ice Cream

I would give it 5 stars for being unique but for that taste, I’ll go with 4 stars. If you want to try it yourself, please do visit their stall in the 2nd level of SM City Cebu. They are right across Chikaan Restaurant. Please support local products!!!
